Arthur Antunes Coimbra, better known as Zico (Rio de Janeiro, March 3, 1953), is a coach, former player and former head of Brazil [2] who acted as half. He is currently without a club.
He became famous as the charismatic leader of the victorious path of Flamengo in the 1970 and 1980, with the peak in the achievements of the Libertadores Cup and Club World Championship team in Rio, in addition to four titles in the Brazilian Championship and its holdings by Brazilian national team in World Cup Argentina 1978, Spain 1982 and Mexico 1986.
It is considered by many experts, professional sports and in particular the fans of Flamengo, the biggest player in club history, and the greatest footballer since Pele There are also few who consider him as the best footballer of the year 1980 and is often called abroad to "White Pele". It is the leading scorer in the Maracana stadium, with 333 goals in 435 matches. He scored 135 goals in national championships.
He was elected as the third greatest footballer of the century, the seventh largest in South America and the fourteenth among all the world, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS). It is one of four Brazilians to appear in the FIFA Hall of Fame (the others being Pele, Garrincha and Didi). He was elected by his own Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the eighth largest player of the century, the ninth largest player in the twentieth century by France Football magazine, the Brazilian ninth century in the sport, according to a survey by the magazine Isto É, and the tenth largest player of all time by British magazine World Soccer.
Juventude de Quintino Quintino Bocaiuva of the district in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro. Besides the youth, he began playing the sport now known as futsal at River Soccer Club, a traditional club of Mercy, where a teacher was Joaquim Pedro da Luz Filho, Your Quinzinho. On the river, his football as a boy's attention.
But his first football club was the camp Flamengo, where she transferred to fourteen years old when in 1967 the broadcaster Celso Garcia, a family friend, attended a match in a tournament at Zico River, where he played with his shirt Santos, [3] in which boys scored ten goals in 14 x 4 victory of his team. Garcia took him to the club's soccer school.
[Edit] Flemish [edit] Early anosZico only debuted in the first team in 1971 in a match against Vasco da Gama, whose score ended 2-1 to the team rubronegro, where the debutant made the pass to score the goal Fio Maravilha victory. [4] Zico was only to establish himself as the holder on the team in 1974 after undergoing intense physical training that included the dedication of much of his day, since he joined the club in 1967 (while still at school ), a muscle-building work, due to the thin body before. [5] And because of his frail body of early stage and their neighborhood of origin (Quintino) earned the affectionate nickname "Zico of Quentin."
Still playing for youth team, played in two matches for the team's main Campeonato Carioca Flamengo in 1972, enough to win his first title as a professional. Although it would take, however, two years to establish himself in the squad and bury the image of a weak physical player who succumbed to the first stroke of their opponents. [5] After these two years, in 1974 (when he also received the shirt 10) was beginning to show exciting football with dribbles, launches and starts fulminating towards goal and the ability to characterize him, a charge of beating Millimeter faults [5].
This year, won his second Carioca Flamengo, the first starter and No. 10, leading a young team in decisions against the most experienced teams of Vasco and America [5] (where the time was playing her brother Edu). In the Brazilian championship, received his first Golden Ball Score Magazine, the magazine has chosen the best player in the league.
Within three years, however, saw Zico celebrate the state title rivals: the Fluminense Rivellino was twice champion in 1975 and 1976 and, more painfully, Vasco took the cup in 1977 after penalty shootout against Flamengo, Zico in which, having the chance to give the title to his club if he converted his recovery, he lost. A series of penalties would continue and would end in victory Vasco [6].
[Edit] "It was Zico" Since 1978, however, the Flemish would enter into a golden period under the command of Field Zico. With an almost perfect football, can only be stopped with violence, [5] Zico won a third championship in Rio, the third club, in editions that year with two held in 1979, the same year that the team would win the prestigious friendly tournament Ramón de Carranza, with emphasis on the victory by 2 x 1, in which he scored one of the goals on Barcelona Johan Neeskens, Allan Simonsen, Hans Krankl and Carles Rexach. [7] In 1979 he scored his 245 th goal match against Goytacaz, surpassing even the 26 years, Dida as the greatest scorer in the history of Flamengo.
The following year was finally the unprecedented title in the Brazilian Championship. The finals were against Atletico Mineiro Reinaldo, Toninho Cerezo and Eder. Injured, Zico did not play the first match, in which the black and whites won, in Mineirão by 1 x 0. He returned to the team in the return match at Maracana, having given passes to the first goal and scoring the second win in the Flamengo 3 x 2 that gave him first hand the trophy to their national champion, [8] to compensate disappointment in the Carioca, where Zico sees rivals Vasco and Fluminense decide the title. Later in 1980, with Flamengo Zico conquer other two tournaments friendly Europeans: the Algarve Tournament and Asturias, with victories over Real Sociedad and Spartak Sofia, and in a bi Ramón de Carranza, through Dinamo Tbilisi and Real Betis. [9]
With the national title, the club has accredited for the first time to compete in the Copa Libertadores. In the group stage, the Flemish had to overcome Atletico again, in a match tie-marked by the expulsion of five players of the opponent, which gave victory to rubronegros after just ten minutes of play. [10] The team arrived at its decision, where Chileans face of Cobreloa. Zico scored both goals in the win by 2 x 1 in the first leg at the Maracana. The back in Chile, was marked by massive violence from rivals, especially his defender Mario Soto, who assaulted with a sharp ring the Flamengo Andrade and Lycus. The Chileans won by 1 x 0, and the regulation of the time, the trophy would be decided on neutral ground, which was in Montevideo, Estadio Centenario. Zico again scored both goals for victory, this time 2 x 0, the second of them, ten minutes from time in one of his most memorable free kicks [11].
The continental title was followed by another Carioca on rivals Vasco, in a match dedicated to coach Claudio Coutinho, who died before the first game of the decision. The Carioca championship had already booked the joy of having imposed a rout of about 6 x 0 Botafogo, returning a defeat for nine years before that still resonated among the two twisted. The magical year of 1981 ended the best way possible: the state decision, the team went to Tokyo to face Liverpool at the British Club World Cup.
The English team was widely favorite: Over the past eight years, won the English championship five times, one UEFA Cup and three UEFA Champions League, having a cast of respected players of the English and Scottish selections, which have continued to look with superiority of the Brazilians in the locker room before the match. [12] [13] [14] The world title, which until then had been to Brazil by Santos of Pele, was won after exquisite view of Flamengo, who won by 3 x 0. The three goals, all scored in the first half, left by Zico played: the first and third, by direct assistance to Nunes and the second, marked by Adílio after Zico's free kick hit the goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar.
Voted the best on the field even without having checked, received individual awards as a coveted sports car from the match sponsor, Toyota, along with Nunez, both demonstrate the great unity of the group, selling vehicles divinity and also the money among the players. [5] Even before departure, when asked about the favoritism of the British, saying: "yes they are favorites, but for the second place, which is up very honorable." During her desperate keeper Grobbelaar was screaming at quarterback and captain Phil Thompson: "Throw away Zico, Thompson, Zico playing away in the name of God." Thereafter, the opposing coach, Bob Paisley, said: "You play a game unknown to us. You dance, that should be banned." [15]
The Golden Age at Flamengo continued the following year, when the club won the only title that had failed in 1981, the Brazilian Championship, in a campaign highlighted by victories away from home, more a response to criticism that the team (and Zico) only played well in the Maracana: [16] two 4 x 3 on Nautical and Paul, two 3 x 2 on the International and Guarani - the match, Zico scored three goals in the victory against the team of Bald and Jorge Mendonca. [ 16] For completeness, the cup was also won away from home against Gremio in x 1 0 victory with new assistance for Zico Nunes. Zico had been hero in the first game of the decision, scoring a goal from the left corner of trivela Emerson Leao, tying a game at home that was falling apart. [16]
The second half of 1982 is not so good: back pain of elimination in the World Cup, Zico lost two tournaments that dispute with Flamengo. In the Copa Libertadores, Flamengo, as champion, enters the contest in the second phase of the tournament in a group of three teams who will appoint one of the finalists. The club won both duels against River Plate and go to the final round needing a win at home Peñarol to force an extra game - had won the Uruguayans in Montevideo. However, it is the opponent who wins, right in the Maracana - the end, curiously, would again be against Cobreloa. State championship is already lost to Vasco.
In the first half of 1983, Flamengo is eliminated in the first phase of the Libertadores group he shared with the Guild (which gets the single seat) and the Bolivian and Blooming Bolívar. In addition, however, the team equaled the Gauchos as the biggest winner of the International Brasileirão, winning his third title. The flavor was more special by the way have eliminated Vasco, in the quarter-finals, with Zico scoring the goal of the tie (which guaranteed the classification Flamengo) and 44 minutes from time. [17] The finals were against the Saints . The state, which aspired to his first title in the tournament, had won the first leg for 2 x 1.
In return, playing hurt, [18] Zico's dream collapsed Santos to score before the first minute, in a match ended in victory for rubronegra 3 x 0. Zico lifted the cup would be aware that until then his last game for Flamengo, but not yet disclosed the transfer, Zico knew if their sale to the Italian team Udinese, [18] already agreed to transfer one month before the decision and kept secret to any protests of the crowd did not disturb the journey toward the title. [19]
[Edit] VoltaApós two seasons in Italy, Zico returned in the second half of 1985 the team's heart. The festivities, however, gave way shortly after the agony after suffering a lack of unfair Márcio Nunes, in a match against Bangor. A devastating blow to his legs: Zico had kinks in both knees and left ankle, head injury of the left fibula and deep bruises on his right leg. [20] He had to undergo three surgeries on his left knee and long recovery period due to consequent muscle problems. Just because they have opted to end his career if he does not do.
"I decided to try because they do not admit the idea of being forced to leave the camps. One day I would stop playing football and not soccer stopping me," Zico said that because of the recovery, had to bend the left leg as amended, having also change the way they tread. [20] There was also the extra motivation to perform another World Cup the following year. To play again, had to endure up to eight hours daily in the weight room Gavea, struggling for new feet to his left leg had suffered atrophy.
The answer to that already considered the former player came in February 1986, just before the World Cup in a Fla x Flu. The festivities were rubronegros before departure for the premiere of Socrates as the Flamengo player that day. [21] After the game, the celebrations have given up due to the gala performance of Zico, who scored three goals - a fault - in victory for Flamengo 4 x 1. [22] In the Flemish, the reward would come to the state title that year and the next, with a fourth championship in Brazil, with the conquest of the green module Union Cup, with him having already changed their style game: momentum replaced by the cadence, dribbling into the goal by first touches and releases [5].
The cup 1987 was the last raised by Zico Flamengo, and would not be recognized by CBF, until day 21 February 2011 which was officiated as the title would indicate that Brazilian champion of 1987 and vice, and therefore represent Brazil in the Libertadores 1988, teams of Sport and Guarani, respectively. In 1988, Flamengo lose to Vasco Carioca (as in previous years) and in the Brasileirão, would be eliminated in the quarter-finals by the Guild. Zico has decided to stop in the first half of 1989, the State lost to Flamengo Botafogo. But the last professional match ended in Flamengo Zico best: memorable in rout of about 5 x 0 Fluminense, in Juiz de Fora in the game where Zico spared no dribbles, new releases and a memorable goal of his specialty: "It was everything I wanted. Finish with a goal and just the way I like most: the lack of" [23].
[Edit] UdineseCobiçado by the country's most traditional clubs such as Roma and Juventus, his visit to the modest team of Friuli has caused outrage in the rest of Italy. The Federation has come to suspend the purchase, valued at $ 4 million (in values of the time) - the most ever so far in the country for a player - which angered the residents of Udine, which began shooting messages of separatism. The motto was "or Zico or Austria!" A reference to the time when the region belonged to the Austrian Empire. [24] The threat was taken seriously by the president, Sandro Pertini, who finally accepted the purchase of Zico.
Zico came to Udine immediately treated like a king. [24] Nevertheless, he maintained his humble attitude and professional looking all leave at will: a team of reserves, Pradella, had come to have intestinal disorders and chills the first time which was scheduled to play alongside Brazilian. [25] Dedicated to helping the club to get the title in Serie A, Zico did his part, leading a poor team to a ninth place in the honorable 1983/84 season, the four points of time remaining in the fourth (Internazionale), who would wave to the UEFA Cup. Zico scored 19 goals, just one behind the artillery of the championship, which went to Michel Platini, Juventus the champion. The detail is that the French played six more matches, [25] large part because of an injury that Zico had suffered in the friendly against Brescia [24].
Often playing hurt, knowing the dependence that the team had for him, Zico began to become disenchanted with the club officers, who had promised to form a strong team able to fight for the title, that was not happening - beyond , the only players with some recognition were his co-selection (and also the future of Flemish) Edinho a veteran and former player of the Italy squad, Causio Franco, who did double the halfback. He began dreaming of his return to Flamengo. [25] The second season has just marked by the struggle to not fall, just playing with him fifteen times and still scoring twelve. [25] Another reason for his desire to leave was in the process Italian who suffered in court for allegedly illegally sending money to Brazil, which only later would end in acquittal. [24] In an interview with British magazine FourFourTwo, Zico explained what happened:
I signed a contract to use image in Brazil and in Italy, the president of Udinese hit another advertising contract. It would require a permit from the IRS Italian so I could advertise in Italy. I respected that and do my other contract. But then the officials of Revenue filed a lawsuit against me and had to appeal. I showed then that the contract was signed in Brazil, who respected the laws of Brazil, and proved that it was paying taxes properly. The funny thing is that I ended up paying more taxes than a citizen of Udine normally pay. I paid something around U.S. $ 500 000 and was prosecuted for tax evasion due to a contractual mistake. I appealed and was fully acquitted. It was totally legal and not done anything to avoid paying my taxes. Only the press did not mention it [13].
Zico did not play in Italy for his play feature, terrifying goalies with their opponents free kicks, leading to heated debates in sports programs on television in the country: "How to prevent goals from Zico?" Discussed [25]. In its passage through Udinese, Zico scored 17 goals in 57 goals among his absence. [25] Of the goals "normal", two are remembered in particular: the winner of an x 0 in November 1983 marked the 41 minutes of second time, then the holders of the Roma, who had never lost to Udinese. [26] Another was a bike in its debut at the legendary San Siro Stadium in the game against Milan, decreasing late in the game the score to 3 x 2 - still finds time to take care of Causio for the equalizer [24].
It was also much applauded and took its name screamed and chanted by opposing fans, a fact that occurred against Ascoli, Genoa and Catania. [24] Against Ascoli, fans, reporters and even applauded the goalkeeper. In Genoa, the whole stadium chanted his name in Catania and the rival team's fans not only sang and chanted his name as well as rooting for him: every time he touched the ball and was cheered when one came up missing around the area , claimed that Zico had levied. When you finish the match, the Brazilian player Pedrinho, Catania (and fellow 1982 Cup, and former opponent of Vasco), was asked by a reporter: "You could have won the game?". And he answered: "How could we even if our fans were cheering for Zico?" [24].
In a survey conducted in November 2006 by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica [27] on the greatest Brazilian players in Italy, Zico appears first, ahead of Mazzola, Falcon, Bald, Kaka and Ronaldo, among others. His charisma and talent have continued to stay in the heart of the Udinese fans even after his departure: in 1989, four years after leaving the club (which fell to Serie B after two seasons have gone though the idol), filled the Stadio Comunale del Friuli in the match that marked his farewell to the Brazilian. [25] Twenty years later, in November 2009, Zico received honorary citizenship of Udine [28].
Who synthesized more enhanced by the great metamorphosis operated in the city he was a journalist of "Il Gazzettino of Venice," professional responsibility to follow him, Luigi Maffei.
For us, Friuli, Zico has the same meaning in a Ferrari engine placed inside a VW. We are the only ones in the world to have such a wonderful car and absurd [24].
[Edit] Selection BrasileiraDescontado his farewell game in 1989 in Udine, and departures by selections below, Zico played for ten years for Brazil, scoring 66 goals in 89 matches, having emerged as the second top scorer in the squad, behind Pele ( later, he was overtaken by Romario).
Played in three World Cups, having experienced the taste of the world title. Its only cups were won by the squad in its debut year, 1976: Copa Rio Branco and the Bicentennial Tournament of the United States (where he scored in the 4 x 1 Italy, one of his most beautiful goals, dribbling and shooting of three opponents left foot goal from Dino Zoff).
His debut came in a match valid for the White River. It was against Uruguay in Montevideo. Marking goal: with the game drawn into 1 x 1 and Rivellino Nelinho and expelled, Zico made the winning goal in a free kick late in the game. [29] Only in 2009 Brazil would once again win the Uruguay squad in her home .
Zico was the World Cup in 1978 in time where they remain anchored in the team coached by Claudio Coutinho. What would be their only goal in the tournament ended badly aside: at the end of the second leg of the first group stage against Sweden, the referee (Welshman Clive Thomas) ended the match when the ball was in the air after collection of corner, before pitching given by Zico did enter networks. Fired up in the match against Poland, the last of the second group stage when he suffered serious muscle problem in his ankle while holding the opponent to throw Zbigniew Boniek [20] [30] - if Brazil passed the final, Zico would not play . The squad had to settle for the third-place (won) after being tied on points and goal difference with less than the host Argentina, after this victory by about 6 x 0 Peru, the great scandal of the tournament.
A perhaps greater drama came in the 1982 World Cup, where Brazil was experiencing huge favoritism. Zico scored four times in the world: a foul against Scotland in game in which reunited three Liverpool players who had played against before six months: Alan Hansen, Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness, two against New Zealand (one of them, volleyed) , and another against Argentina. In the match against rivals, also has proceed to mark the third and junior also became involved in the second, were given passes to attend Serginho Chulapa Hawk. The game was already valid for the second phase, where a group formed by Italy would also slot in the semifinals. Brazil was the game against the Italians could draw to pass the stage: both had beaten Argentina, but Brazil had done with one goal more.
Everything went wrong in the final match of the group. The coach of the Azzurri, Enzo Bearzot, had already seen the skills of Zico in 1979 when he coached the squad of Rest of World in a friendly against Argentina to commemorate the one year anniversary of the country at the World Cup title in 1978. Zico arrived in Buenos Aires minutes before departure, entering the second half. He scored the equalizing goal and took the team to win FIFA's turn [5] To undo the Zico, climbed violent Claudio Gentile, who has stopped Maradona, the basis of many blows, the match against Argentina. In the only moment in which he could extricate himself from the heavy mark of Gentile, Zico gave the pass for the goal of Socrates, who tied the game at 1 x 1. [24] In another moment, the enemy came so strong to pull the shirt Zico's that ended up tearing it. The bid was within the penalty area, but the clear penalty was not marked by the referee Abraham Klein. Italy won 3 x 2 as Zico, until then tied with West German Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on the artillery of the world (that would reward with the hangman Paolo Rossi, who had three goals in the Italian victory in that game and do other after three), considers her "biggest disappointment in football." [31]
The third and last World Cup Zico would be 1986. Zico still lived distrust of criticism over his physical condition after the injury caused by Márcio Nunes, 1985. His answer would come in April for the national team in a friendly against Yugoslavia. In the Brazilian victory by 4 x 2, he scored another of his most beautiful goals, opposing invading the area leaving behind a row of four defenders and still getting rid of the goalkeeper before finishing for the networks [23].
Still, by virtue of his recovery, was the world as a reserve. He played five matches and three of Brazil's World Cup, against Northern Ireland in the first phase, with Brazil already qualified, Poland, in the knock-out final, and France in the quarterfinals. Did not score, missing the best chance he had to do so, a penalty against the French. Zico had just entered the game already tied for 1 x 1, and made sensational launch for White, who was overthrown in the penalty area by goalkeeper Joël Bats. How cold was still in the game, Zico was reluctantly hit the penalty kick, which he acknowledged having charged wrong. [32] The continued stalemate in overtime in the semifinals and the place was decided in a series of penalties. Scheduled to hit again, Zico got his collection in the decision, but Socrates and Julius Caesar would have lost their and Brazil eventually eliminated. It was the last official match for Brazil's Zico - surprisingly, the soccer star has lost only once for the national team in World Cups, in the fateful match against Italy in 1982.
In the 1990 World Cup, coach Sebastiao Lazaroni, arrived to talk with Zico the player would not reconsider its decision not to contest the Cup. Zico opted not to play, and other plans that year, during the presidency of Fernando Collor, was National Secretary of Sports, public office he held until the following year.
For the Pre-Olympic squad, Zico was during the qualifying tournament for the Olympics in 1972 one of the highlights of the team. Even made the goal of classification, but was suspiciously cut from the Games. His disappointment with the absence made him think of to stop playing at the time [13].
[Edit] Returning to play in 1991, returned to football, to play in the fledgling Japanese football. In Japan, he worked at Sumitomo Metals and the club originated from this, the current Kashima Antlers, 1991 to 1994, when they finally left the camps.
Hs passing in Japan, along with other famous players have already retired or about to retire, is now apontadoa as a major reason for the professionalization and popularization of soccer in the country, which ultimately promote the first edition of Japanese professional league in 1993. In the final, against Verdy Kawasaki (now Tokyo Verdy), received a rare expulsions on career, spit on the ball because of his irritation with the performance of the referee, who was favoring his opponent (who ended up with the title.) [33 ] The goals of the finals, anyway, out of players inspired by Zico playing football in the newly professionalized nipônico: by Kashima, his former colleague Flamengo Alcindo; by Verdy, the former opponent of Bismarck and also Vasco Kazu, Japanese who played in Brazil.
Zico retired after the second edition of the J-League, Kashima and took third overall. Even without glasses achieved in Japan, Zico was greatly revered in the country, he learned to love football a lot because of the charisma and performances of veteran idol, [33] who also won a statue in his honor there. Oswaldo de Oliveira, to train Kashima, summed up the importance of Zico to the club:
Zico led the formation of Kashima in its infancy, when the club was amateur. His concept is fabulous and the crowd today leads a band for him in every game. The Antlers club would be a factory, and the great Zico did turn, gave the history and tradition [34]
